Job Description

A new position is available as a Research Engineering Technician II, and this position contributes to the effectiveness of the research and teaching laboratories of the Civil, Architectural and Environmental Engineering (CArEE) through direct operation, maintenance, use, and care of research equipment, instruments, tools, and machinery, or in assistance to or training others in the same.

Responsibilities include interacting and collaborating with faculty, students, and external parties to support research, experimentation, and instruction; and devising or recommending technical solutions and enforcing safety and operating protocols, rules, and guidelines.

The successful candidate will oversee scheduling and supervision of multiple research assistants in laboratory operations and equipment use, as well as assist in setting up teaching laboratory activities and overseeing some aspects of student activities. Advanced training will be offered for the successful candidate to advance their abilities and the collective capabilities of the research team in the CArEE Department.

  • Performs highly skilled work to plan, design, fabricate, maintain and repair advanced equipment and instrumentation with very close tolerances and precision as required for teaching and/or research purposes
  • Receives work requests from faculty and staff, solicits input concerning general requirements and executes final technical design for lab and field projects
  • Understands how their and related teams' efforts impact broader functional objectives
  • Provides guidance to and finalizes detailed drawings and/or schematics of systems
  • Possesses the skill set to undertake physical demanding laboratory activities including, but not limited to, concrete placement and finishing, steel welding, experimental test fabrication, set-up, and testing in the laboratory and under field conditions (training will be provided in areas of lacking expertise)
  • Proposes improvements to processes and methods as needed
  • Gathers and analyzes data to identify and solve complex problems that arise with little or no precedent
  • Impacts the effectiveness of own team and closely related teams
  • Exchanges advanced technical information and ideas effectively for physical experiments including data acquisition systems (DAS) and instrumentation
  • Positive oral and written communication skills with colleagues and team members. Uses tact and diplomacy when dealing with own and other teams
  • Develops working relationships with various internal parties and may work with external parties, as needed
  • Assist in equipment calibration and DAS development
  • Highly desirable if the successful candidate has some level of forklift-bobcat operational experience, a commercial driving license or the ability to learn these skills once employed
  • Advises faculty and staff of available equipment and possible alternative designs that might meet their project needs
  • Install new equipment and work with various manufacturers to provide proper site preparation for new instruments and equipment
  • Train and supervise technical staff and lab users on the use of testing systems and data acquisition. Maintain the reservations for testing equipment and work requests
  • Conduct and assist students and faculty with research and experiments in all disciplines of the CArEE Department
  • Design, run and maintain complex testing systems and the hydraulic systems
  • Maintain and calibrate equipment and instruments for proper operation and accurate data, which support the structures, materials, geotechnical, hydraulics, and environmental labs
  • Works autonomously but within established procedures and practices to solve standard problems
Minimum Qualifications

Bachelor's degree or an equivalent combination of education and experience at least 2 years of experience from which comparable knowledge and skills can be acquired is necessary.
