Fiscal Technician
Job Description
The GEO Fiscal Tech handles departmental fiscal transactions, performs monthly departmental reconciliations, tracks student payment of GEO and program fees, and carries out HR duties related to searches, hiring, and job ending. S/he works independently to monitor the organizational budget, keep current on expenditures and balances, and assist the director with budget and fiscal year-end projection and planning. The position also provides university process and policy compliance support to the GEO director and GEO staff, including travel support, building safety, and required university compliance activity (e.g., EAP, COOP, etc.) Working closely with the university Bursar, office of Procurement, and the Accounts Payable office, the Fiscal Tech will develop and coordinate the delivery of financial training workshops for VT faculty-led program leaders and will support the faculty administratively, including preparing student payment forms and vendor contracts. S/he may assist faculty with logistical and financial arrangements for their programs.
This role serves as a departmental liaison to Human Resources, Payroll, Procurement, and the University Bursar.
Required Qualifications
- Proficiency in the following computer programs: Microsoft Office suite, Banner Finance (or similar)
- Knowledge of bookkeeping/accounting principles and procedures
- Experience reconciling fiscal accounts
- Ability to interact effectively with internal and external customers using both oral and written communication skills to discuss financial processes or issues
- Ability to work with minimal supervision
- Strong organizational skills
- Demonstrated ability to resolve routine issues and make independent and logical decisions and/or recommendations
- Experience coordinating projects or teams
Preferred Qualifications
- Bachelor’s degree or equivalent training in accounting, finance, or business or related field
- Working knowledge of university accounting policies and procedures
- Experience processing payments
- Experience using university Finance, HRIS, or similar database systems
- Experience with MicroStrategy, Scoop, HokieMart and/or TimeClock
- Data entry experience
- Ability to demonstrate discretion when working with confidential information
- Ability to research, investigate, analyze, reconcile, and evaluate data
- Experience in procurement
- Demonstrated commitment to continuous improvement

Salary Information
Commensurate with experience up to $45,000
